From Excel Spreadsheet to Web Application

For the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside high-level consultants from major consulting firms.

These experts have mastered Excel to perfection and often use this tool to prototype complex solutions for their clients.

They are the masters of the software, capable of creating impressive functional models.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be able to reproduce such spreadsheets myself, but it really shows the power of their tool.

My expertise lies in technology, and this is where I can bring something different.

As a CTO, I can transform these Excel files into real web applications when the need arises.

This makes it possible to deploy these tools in a simple and effective way, often at a much larger scale than what the Excel file alone could achieve.

Essentially, it’s about moving from a prototype, often limited to internal use or a few users, to a much more scalable and accessible solution.

One of my first experiences in this field was with a consultant who wanted to facilitate discussions about inter- and intra-team collaboration through a mechanism based on the prisoner’s dilemma.

His Excel model was well thought out, but it needed a new format to be more impactful.

We discussed the goals of this tool and the best way to achieve them in digital form.

Together, we transformed this file into an intuitive web application, which was then deployed online and adapted to work on closed-network boxes, with routers, mini-servers, and tablets for participants.

This setup ensured data security and confidentiality while offering an immersive user experience.

This tool was successfully used by clients in the fashion, pharmaceutical, and consulting sectors. User feedback was very positive, both for the educational aspect and for the practical and interactive experience that this new version provided.

More recently, I had the opportunity to collaborate with another talented consultant from a major firm, who had designed a complex Excel model to help managers make strategic decisions.

Again, the power of the model was evident, and even though I don’t speak spreadsheet language, we worked together to transform it into a deployable web application, accessible on multiple platforms and in several languages.

The challenge was to maintain all the complex logic of the Excel file while offering a user-friendly interface and smooth navigation.

We had to rethink some features to make them more intuitive, with interactive charts and data visualizations that made the results easier to understand.

Today, this tool is used by major groups in the luxury and energy sectors, and continues to expand into other industries. Its adoption was facilitated by the fact that the tool is now available not only on the web, but also on mobile devices, allowing managers to use it on the go, during meetings or in the field.

These experiences have shown me the importance of digitizing work methods and extending the reach of tools created by consultants.

It’s not just about coding an application, but truly understanding each consultant’s core expertise, grasping the business logic behind each Excel model, and then translating it into a digital solution that retains the same richness while offering better accessibility and an improved user experience.

I’m convinced that the best ideas deserve to go beyond Excel spreadsheets and become robust web solutions that facilitate their deployment and large-scale use.

This allows consultants to focus on their true value-added activities: analysis, consulting, and supporting their clients, without worrying about the technical limitations of the tools they use.

Working with consultants on these projects, I’ve learned to navigate between very different worlds: the world of Excel spreadsheets, where every cell is carefully thought out, and the world of web development, where every line of code aims to translate this logic into a practical and scalable interface.

This complementarity is really at the heart of what I want to continue doing: transforming effective prototypes into digital solutions that multiply their impact, while respecting the essence of what the consultants have created.

It is this collaboration, this bridge between two worlds, that allows us to create truly transformative tools, capable of bringing lasting value to companies and their teams.
